Prebuilt binary

The compiler ships as a single self-contained binary (macOS and Linux, arm64 and x64) with the standard library built in. The installer pulls the newest versioned release. The rolling latest build is rebuilt from every push to main (MILO_TAG=latest to install it), so it is as current as a source checkout and breaks as often.

curl -fsSL https://milo-language.github.io/milo/install.sh | sh

This installs to ~/.local/bin (MILO_INSTALL_DIR to change, MILO_TAG=vX.Y.Z to pin a release). You still need clang. Later, milo upgrade replaces the binary with the newest release (--check to only look, --nightly for the rolling build); a Homebrew or .deb install upgrades through its package manager instead. Tarballs are on the releases page.

macOS quarantines browser downloads

A binary downloaded through a browser is quarantined and macOS refuses to run it. Use curl, or run xattr -d com.apple.quarantine milo.

For working on the compiler itself.

You need Bun (the compiler is TypeScript) and clang (Milo emits LLVM IR and links with clang).

./milo runs bun run src/main.ts. To use milo from any directory, symlink it onto your PATH (the wrapper follows the link back to the repo):
